18 - 30 November 2006 (Opening Reception: 20 November)
Location: Senju Campus, Tokyo University of the Arts
Topology is an area of mathematics that is concerned with relative positional relations, sizes and basic shapes. Also known as “soft geometrics,” it equally classifies the shapes of mugs and donuts as variations of series of circles. In this exhibition that was shown at the Tokyo University of the Arts’ Senju Campus, media artist Ingo Gunther presented a topology themed installation combining video and sculptural elements, in which he depicted “landscapes” based on altitude data of places on the same latitude in Japan and the USA, from the respective northern to the southern tips.
The exhibition also included visual projections of the ”WorldProcessor” project that Gunther started in 1988, onto the university building’s exterior wall. This was an attempt to reconsider “WorldProcessor” as an instrument to address global topics through a series of globes. Furthermore, in ”Attempt at Diplom” the artist shed light on hidden aspects of war and foreign diplomacy as two sides of the same coin.
