8 October - 25 October 1998
Location: Tochoji Temple Auditorium P3, NADiff, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the streets, and others
Ed and Ellis was the project name of two artists, Tracey MacKenna from the UK and Edwin Janssen from Holland. In it they tried to converse with people of all types to find out what ‘Tokyo' is for the people who live in the city, rather than seeing it from the point of view of foreigners. P3 became not only a space for the exhibit, but also a cafe´ where artists and visitors, or the just the visitors themselves, could communicate. The artists went out into the city and directly told people on the streets to check out the exhibition.
Because their object was the megalopolis Tokyo, the exhibition was held at several different locations in collaboration with other organizations and facilities such as NADiff, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the Ueno Royal Museum, and Command N. By laying down trails through the city, the artists created a web of lines and movement to form an omni-locational exhibition.
The project explored the possibilities for art and artists to be a medium to reveal the real city by directly communicating with it, and how such activities could be developed to overcome the limitations of existing artistic expression.
