Project to Extend the Great Wall of China by 10,000 Meters was executed at Jiayuguan City in China. The artist installed a 10,000-meter-long fuse and then ignited it to extend the Great Wall of China with smoke and flame.
Location: Tochoji Temple Auditorium P3 (Tokyo), Jiayuguan City (China)
After the Primeval Fireball Exhibition in 1991, Cai Guo Qiang and P3 discussed the project plans depicted in Primeval Fireball and chose the one that would take place in China. One year of research was conducted which resulted in the local government in China granting permission and a firework manufacturer in Beijing giving its cooperation.
In China, the artist merged two projects, Extend the Great Wall of China by 10,000 Meters and Rekindling the Smoke Signal Towers, and created a 10,000-meter-long great wall of flame and gun smoke that started from the ancient westernmost check-post of the Great Wall in Jiayuguan, China on the evening of 27 February 1993.
At the P3 gallery, Cai Guo Qiang presented a gigantic installation of a cloth dragon that is used in the festivals of his home country. The Great Wall of China often uses a dragon as a metaphor. In the sub gallery, a Jiayuguan pharmacy appeared and offered Chinese herbal remedies that allowed the user to assimilate the mental state of project participants in China. In tasting these herbal drinks, the members of the audience were incorporated into his artwork.
