6-14 October 2013
Location: Fukagawa Shogaigakushu Center

Organized by the Hongan no kai, a group that comprises Minamata disease patients and supporters, the “Minamata Art Meeting 2013” was realized in Minamata City with cooperation from local residents. The idea behind the event was to explore and illustrate the current issues and future prospects of Minamata by way of art.
Installed at the Fukagawa Shogaigakushu Center were a total of 56 globes, including 24 newly created ones, as part of media artist Ingo Gunther’s noted “World Processor” project. On October 6, art director Fram Kitagawa also hosted a talk session with Masato Ogawa, a fisherman and vice president of the Hongan no kai, in front of a memorial monument at Eco Park Minamata.
Furthermore, on October 9, a ceremony commemorating the opening of the “Minamata Convention on Mercury,” a diplomatic meeting attended by approximately 1,000 persons including ministers from more than sixty countries, took place at the Minamata City Cultural Hall. At this occasion, Ingo Gunther exhibited his work and gave a lecture.
