What's in a name
By Shigeaki Iwai

International contemporary artist Shigeaki Iwai constructed an art project called 'self-introduction about names' for three years from1999 based on interviews of more than 300 people from various countries around the world. The book version of the project What's in a name contains an assortment of pages that are the origins and meanings of people's names, together with their names in their own languages. The readers are inspired by the interwoven significance of names that are so different from each other, against the backdrop of the human history of immigration, war and invasion.
